Queen Eleanor Memorial at Waltham Cross is now a thriving pedestrian only space that is comfortable and safe for people to move through as well as to pause and socialise. The development of the square started in January 2019 and was managed by the civil engineering contractor Danaher and Walsh.

Queen Eleanor Square is part of the Council’s wider regeneration scheme to bring a social, environmental and economic transformation to Waltham Cross. By creating a more inviting town centre that will boost the area’s profile as an attractive place to live and work, while also making the most of its prime location and transport links into London.

“We are delighted to support the transformation of the once congested, traffic-dominated heart of Waltham Cross into a vibrant new pedestrianised area for the whole community to enjoy. The new Queen Eleanor Square is a celebration of the market town’s unique and fascinating history, and provides scope for a whole host of place-making events to boost the town’s profile, increase footfall to businesses and support the local economy.” - Adam Wood, Head of Infrastructure & Regeneration at Hertfordshire LEP.

Bailey Streetscene provided a comprehensive package of street furniture to provide security, seating and cycle stands to the town centre. Initial interaction with the architect, Arup, was back in April 2016. Various discussions and design meetings took place over the 3 year period to the completion of works on site.

Bailey Streetscene demonstrated their strengths by working with all parties: the architect, client and contractor, to make sure everyone's concepts were included in the overall design. We adapted products from our standard range to suit the project as a way to stay within the clients budget.

The location was not closed off to the public due to it being an important access point to the town centre. This meant that the team had to work in a high footfall area with a small delivery and storage space.

“This new traffic free zone will not only provide an attractive new focal point at the heart of the community, but also increase connectivity between Waltham Cross and Enfield, helping to drive footfall and new business to the town.”  - Minister of State for Local Growth, the Rt Hon Jake Berry MP.
