UK Government's £2 billion package for cycling & walking

Commuting by foot or by bike could relieve the demands on public transport during the exit of lockdown.

The department for transport has developed a £2 billion scheme to boost green transport across the country. We have already seen temporary barriers set up across roads in cities to provide larger paths and cycle lanes, making it easier to maintain social distancing during this pandemic.

These ‘Pop-up’ bike lanes will be seen more frequently in the coming weeks, as part of the first stage of the government's scheme. Funding will be given to local authorities across the country to make it easier to implement these provisions. Greater Manchester wants to create 150 miles of protected cycle track, and Transport for London, has plans for a “bike Tube” network above Underground lines.

“During this crisis, millions of people have discovered cycling - whether for exercise or as a means of safe, socially-distanced transport.” Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary. “When the country does get back to work we need those people to stay on their bikes and be joined by many more.”

The Government plans to launch an investment strategy for cycling and walking with aims to transform and double the amount of cycling and walking by 2025. There will be higher standards of cycling infrastructure across England and a long-term budget proposed to match what happens for roads. There will also be e-scooter trials and additional charging points for electric cars.

“We know cars will continue to remain vital for many, but as we look to the future we must build a better country with greener travel habits, cleaner air and healthier communities.” - Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary.

Cycling and walking are beneficial modes of transport for the individual, with lower maintenance costs than cars and the personal health benefits of exercising every day. Then there are the local benefits of lowering the traffic on the roads, reducing congestion and noise pollution. And there are the global benefits of working together to tackle climate change by reducing CO2 emissions.

There will be a renewed focus on the government's Cycle to Work Scheme which provides benefits to employers and employees. Businesses should encourage staff that are starting to head back into work to make the choice of cycling or walking where possible. Providing cycle parking on your premises will create a secure storage environment and build a positive future for your company.
